The Cold War Museum has made me the guest of honor at a BBQ dinner adjacent to its location in northern Virginia next month. They are recognizing me for my “dedication to preserving Cold War history.” That’s nice, and I truly appreciate it.
The event is billed as a ‘gathering’ and is on Thursday evening, 12th November, at The Old Bust Head Brewery, 7134 Farm Station Road, Vint Hill, VA 20187, from 6 – 9pm. All are welcome. Tickets are $80 and available here.
The Cold War Museum was established in 1996 and opened to the public on the former US Army SIGINT base at Vint Hill in 2011. Since then, its collection and reputation has grown, thanks largely to an all-volunteer staff of military and intelligence veterans. It is open every Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 4pm, and on weekdays by appointment.

The museum is dedicated to education and research on the years between the end of World War II and the dissolution of the Soviet Union. It organizes an ongoing series of online talks by retirees, authors and experts, exploring a variety of topics related to the Cold War. It also publishes a very informative quarterly newsletter, and its website hosts a variety of Cold War stories, biographical narratives, and commentaries.
Gary Powers Jr was a co-founder of the museum, and is the current interim president. I have known Gary for over 30 years and admired throughout, his dedication to preserving Cold War history as well as his father’s memory. The museum’s board of directors include Buz Carpenter and Chuck Wilson, former SR-71 and U-2 pilots respectively, who have encouraged and assisted over many years, my efforts to chronicle the history of the Dragon Lady.
For those attending the event on the 12th, the museum will be open from 3 – 6pm. I will be there, with some copies of DRAGON LADY TODAY and SHADOW FLYER for sale.
Come along!
